As 2019 begins, another season for the Anime Brain Freeze team ends. So John and CC steal the new year’s thunder by delivering their final Review from Summer Season 2018 with the 5th installment of the modern day gentleman thief Lupin the Third. They also talk about the shows that didn’t quite make the cut in the Chop ‘n’ Drop and pick their personal winners for best show of the season.
The gang says goodbye to 2018 with a double dose of rowdy robot rumbles. John kicks off the show by talking about the third iteration in the Gundam Build franchise, Gundam Build Divers. And details the highs and lows of this different spin on one of the most iconic mechs out there. After that CC joins the quirky cast of Planet With in their interstellar war and gushes about the many well written characters, story developments, surprises, themes and layers of this interesting little sci-fi action show.
In an episode filled with bad people, CC gets things going by tackling the third season of Overlord and explains why the interesting approach of making the villain of the series the main character didn’t work out as well this time as it did in the previous seasons. After that the hosts unleash their combined game brains and talk about the many ludicrous adventures the main protagonist of Chio’s School Road experiences on the daily way to her temple of education.
CC kicks off this episode by standing his ground against the mongol army in Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion and later wraps things up by joining the hunt for vampires in pre-World War II Japan with Sirius the Jaeger. Meanwhile John bares witness to a fierce stage play in Revue Starlight and dishes out some interesting background information about the type of musical theater this series is based on.
This week, the gang gets athletic and discusses to very different kinds of Sports Anime. First talk about how the consistent summer vacation theme and sympathetic characters of the laid-back Beach volleyball series Harukana Receive make for a generally relaxing, good time. Then CC goes into the opposite direction with the high tension Badminton drama Hanebado and explains why the visually impressive series stumbles in the story department.
The hosts dive head-first into the giant Anime leaf-piles of fall in the Sneak Peek and bring you their opinions on all the hot premieres they checked out. After that it’s time to return to UA Academy and its many colorful heroes in another amazingly strong outing of My Hero Academia.
